CHAPTER ONE
2014
Zara couldn’t help staring at the vessels that passed by her cove. Each one contained a different story and a different set of sailors. Her father had warned her that interacting with the humans, or even simply studying them, was an addiction, one she would soon have to learn to overcome. Each mermaid was presented with the same challenge on their twenty-second birthday. They each had to make a choice to stay in the waters and live with their families, or to give up everything they had always known, for love, and join the human race.
For thousands of years, the merpeople had joined the two-legged humans’ culture, going undetected. And it wasn’t as if mermaids could never go into the waters again afterwards. Each full moon they had the opportunity to dive into the salty water of the ocean and join their fellow merpeople under the moonlight. However, each full moon that passed made that transition harder and harder for the mermaid to accomplish. The longer they were out of the ocean and away from their mer-form, the harder it was on their body to shift back to their original form.
She knew that her decision was about to be due. She hadn’t told anyone what she was thinking about choosing; she didn’t want the added pressure from King Triton, her father, and his brother, Poseidon, her uncle. Humans always got the lineage wrong in their stories. So many of the gods were intertwined that they all ended up being related to one another in some way or another, but the rules for joining the human race were strict. A merperson could only marry once, and it could only be for love. Any other reason wouldn’t be approved. You had to have King Triton’s blessing in order to make the final conversion into the human world.
“What are you looking at, Zara?”
Her head whipped around to the side to look at Sadie, her mother, who was swimming in the lagoon. “That ship out there. It comes by here every day around this time, like they are just waiting.”
“They are predators. Always remember that.” Her mother’s tone was adamant.
“You only say that because you don’t know them yet. Everyone is a shark to you,” Zara retorted.
“Men are men, Zara. They will kill to get what they want.”
“Is that what you tell Daddy?” Zara valued her mother and knew that she would always be there to support her, but she worried that her mother was constantly trying to sway her against all human men and make her change her mind about the choices she had spinning around in her head.
“Your father is different. Gods know how to treat their women,” she said flatly.
“No, they don’t, Mother. You are just blinded by love.” She watched the curve of her mother’s lips come up and form a smile. It was the truth. Her mother and father were very much in love, even after all these years and hundreds of children. Humans talked about having large families with nine or ten siblings. They should try having two hundred and fifty nine sisters and twice as many brothers.
“And what a blindness to have. You should be so lucky, young lady.”
“One day, Mother, maybe I will be.”

Ashley is married and lives in Houston with her husband Tony. They have two dogs named Toto and Doogie. They have been together for over 10 years and he brings her more joy than she could ever imagine as a child. She loves to read and has been hooked on the romance genre ever since her lifelong best friend gave her "Ashes to Ashes' by Tami Hoag to read when they were younger.

Ashley finds her strength through her family, especially her parents. They always support her in life, they push her to strive for greatness. There once was a motto that Ashley heard in her youth through her Taekwondo life 'Reach for the Stars' and that is what Ashley has always done. It was through her upbringing that the values Ashley has and display's came from. With her Parents always cheering her on in life she was able to grow up having faith in herself and her ability to conquer the world

In a world we think we know, live other races entirely hidden from the mortal perspective. Creatures of legend, of fable and myth, their very history and nature have allowed them to walk side by side with humans since time immemorial. They are warriors, they are hunters, and they are Algula. Vampire. And in their own midst, a battle is brewing for supremacy, for dominance, that can and will affect all around them. Old hatred never dies and vengeance is a fiery sword that cuts a bloody swath.

Excerpts (4) - Please pick two to post

Chapter Four – Blood Purple
Zayn lay with his head down on his desk, thinking about Nikole and what happened to her. The feeling he’d had while he watched her vanish… Derrik had been so close and within his grasp and now, gone. He needed to find her; he needed to bring her home. He couldn’t lose another person he loved. He had promised to protect her, always. His mind was racing, thinking of all the different things that could be happening to her, the torture, and the possibility of them killing her. He felt the urge to drown himself in whisky. Grabbing up the flask he kept in his desk drawer, he lifted it to his lips, the metal cool against his hot skin. Nikole had given him this flask as a gift, shortly after they moved to Colorado. He knew this because they were on the slopes learning how to ski. She' handed it to him right before she pushed him down a hill backwards on skis. He couldn’t help remembering. She had even had it engraved for him. Written on the front it said, “Akhs, A Girl’s Best Friend.” He ran his fingers over the inscription as he read the scribbled words. Feeling the tears well up, he closed his eyes, trying to hold them in, and thought back to the day she was born.
“Ikram, you have to push! The baby is almost here, just one more push!” The midwife said to his omm. He could hear her, she was screaming and cursing. The words coming out of her mouth were words he had never heard from her before. His baba was running around frantic, yelling at all the servants.
“What is Zayn doing in here? This is no place for the boy. Take him away.”
“No, I’m 115 years old; I can be here! I want to be here to see the birth. Plus, my omm could die!” Refusing to be removed he stood off in the distance, keeping steady watching over her. He’d only heard about childbirth, never witnessed it on his own. Most women died, it was rare that any life, let alone omm and child survive. It was during that thought that he heard it, the piercing sound of a baby crying, then someone saying, “It’s a girl!” He watched them place the baby in his omm’s arms. He saw the tears running down his omm’s face.
Slowly and with caution, he walked to his omm’s bedside, looking down at the little creature, covered in blood and utterly disgusting.
“Meet your okht Nikole.” He couldn’t help but feel his body warm at the sight of her, the soft pink skin, and the noises she was making, what this now meant for him. He turned to his baba and knelt before him; he spoke the words passed down from Warrior to Warrior. “I pledge my allegiance to thee, for this child will be protected, with mine own blood and life. No harm shall come to her and no enemy shall covet her. With this I so swear.” Kissing his abb’s ring sealing the oath he pledged to his okht. He meant every word; no harm would come to her.
He felt his omm’s eyes looking upon him while he was kneeling on the ground. As he looked over to her she extended her hand and grasped his. Zayn slowly squeezed it, not sure of how to act around a babe. “Congratulations Omm, she is perfect.”
“Come Zayn, hold her. She has your special eyes, I can tell.” He was confused because they were still brown; no color had set in yet. How did she know she had his eyes? He felt his heart start to race when his abb, King Tamman, placed his hand on Zayn’s shoulder. “Give her to Zayn; let him hold his little okht.” His omm looked up at him. Those beautiful green eyes sparkled as she handed Nikole over. Nervously cradling her in his arms, he ran his index finger over her cheek. “Hello Nikole, I’m Zayn, your big akh. I’ll keep you safe. Always.”

Chapter Twenty-Six Blood Purple
Dominic pulled up to the house, looking up at the tall wall surrounding the mansion. The red brick cast a shadow over the car, making it unseen from the side of the road, the perfect place to hide. He opened the door and the cool evening breeze hit him hard. The smell of the mountains captivated him. Getting out, he started to walk along the wall, analyzing his options of entry. His leg still throbbed, the warm blood running down it. His mind couldn’t stop thinking about his omm. Had that really been her? He knew he was worthless as an ebn’, and he killed her after all. If he hadn’t been born, she would still be alive, and his abb wouldn’t have such hatred for him.
He heard something off in the distance, pausing to listen closely while inclining his head towards the tree line. He saw two animals a few feet away, a doe and her fawn. Lucky fucking animal to have an omm who tended to him, he thought. No one understood what it was like, killing their own omm. The failure of knowing you were letting everyone down didn’t matter the age, you still fucking failed. He walked for half a mile looking for a weakness in the wall, a place to set up his attack. He saw a foot hold up ahead. It looked like an old ladder was attached to the wall. Dominic ran his hand over the indentations on the wall, gripping his hands in them. Looking back over his shoulder at the deer, he let out a sigh. “Fuck you, Omm. You left me to rot at the hand of my abb. Now it’s time to fucking end this war.”
He started to scale the wall, right hand, left foot, left hand, right foot, over and over. Reaching the top he peered over the rim. He saw the lights shining on the grounds, the dogs walking the grass patrolling for intruders. He pulled himself up, supporting his weight on the wall.
“Dominic, this isn’t you, stop this. This is your abb’s, fight not yours.” Dominic hissed his fangs out toward the voice.
“What do you want now? I thought I told you to leave me the fuck alone, like you have my whole fucking life.” He pulled his lower half up onto the wall, looking down at the dogs walking in the grass. “You never cared about me. Why are you trying to stop me?”
Her translucent form grazed his hand then went up to his cheek, cupping it. He could feel the coolness from her form; his body yearned for love, for compassion. How could he take love and tenderness from someone who was the first to betray him?
“Dominic, I love you, never doubt that. My love for you started the moment you were conceived. I had your akh and okht for your abb but you, you were for me, someone I could love and claim as mine. You were all I wanted.”
“LIAR! All you do is lie!”
He felt the tears in his eyes form and then blinked as they started to roll down his cheek. He was such a coward, worthless and weak. Look at him, crying on a wall to his omm. What kind of man does this shit? He looked back to the mother doe, she was cleaning her fawn. Lucky son of a bitch. “Why are you just now showing up? Why can’t you just answer me?”
Sarah started to shake her head at him, trying to make him see. “Dominic, I am here to help you save yourself. I don’t want the only child I loved to die not knowing a parent’s love. Let me help you; let me show you what you mean to me.”
Dominic shook his head no with a flurry of anger. “It’s too late for me.”

Chapter Seven – Blood Yellow
Nasir watched as they wheeled Adara into the emergency room with Zayn following close behind. He knew this was going to be hard on the couple. They had a flimsy relationship at best. He didn’t know what would happen at the end of the day, the staff was being very tight lipped about Adara’s condition. No one would say if she was going to lose the baby; if she did, gods help them with how Zayn would take that news.
Nasir knew he needed to call Nikole. That wasn’t going to go well. She would be furious she hadn’t been the first one notified. He paused marginally before pulling out his cell phone. No one liked delivering bad news, especially not to an on-edge, pissed off royal Algula. He started to dial her number but stopped when he heard Zayn commanding orders at the medical doctors. He slipped his phone back in his pocket as he ran into the emergency room.
“Zayn, what happened?!?” Nasir asked as he rushed through the double doors to find Zayn shouting at the doctor.
“He said I can’t be in there as they examine her. I told him that’s unacceptable. I am his King, and I order it.” Zayn roared out to Nasir as he pushed through to the exam room.
The doctor and Nasir looked at each other in silence. They both realized there was no stopping Zayn when he was like this. The doctor accepted this and went back into the room to finish the evaluation on Adara. Nasir stepped back into the waiting room and he pulled out his cell phone. He dialed Nikole’s number and hoped she was in a better mood than her Akh.
He let it ring a few times, and then heard her pick up the phone. “Nikole, you need to come to the hospital quick. There has been an accident and Adara is in trouble.” He heard the anger immediately in the tone of her voice.
“What do you mean an accident? Where are you? Is she hurt badly? You should have called me sooner. When did this happen?” She bellowed through the phone.
He didn’t want to tell her it was Zayn; that would hurt her too badly without knowing the full story. “Well someone showed up at her apartment and there was some sort of fight, the details are still a bit hazy. She is unconscious at the moment, but the doctors think she is going to be fine. I’ll tell you more when you get here. Please come quickly.” He took a moment to pause, catching his breath when she came back at him.
“Nasir, what are you not telling me?”
He can’t tell her. Not like this….”Please, just show up soon.”

Chapter Fourteen – Blood Yellow
“I don’t think you fully understand what you are getting yourself into by messing around with Jonothon. He’s a man, and despite how much you disagree, you are a woman, and because of that the man will try and take advantage of you Leigh.”
“Abb, you don’t know what you are talking about. This isn’t the same time-frame you grew up in. A lot has changed and you don’t know what it is you are speaking of. So please stop.”
“You seem to be forgetting something little girl. While I granted you the power to open this facility here and run it, you, dear bent, are mine at the end of the night.”
She bit back her remark; she knew her place…for now. “Yes Sir’ Abb.” She lowered her head in obedience. He would pay for this embarrassment. There may be no one around, but he would pay. He didn’t have to do this to her. She was the only one who ever did anything of value for him.
“Are you sure your boy toy was able to track them?”
“Yes, Jonothon wouldn’t let me down.”
“Yet. He hasn’t let you down YET. Have Jonothon come see me at once upon his return. Do not let me catch you with him again Leigh. We are NOT like that. He is beneath us. Have I made myself clear?”
“Yes Abb.” Leigh silently counted to ten. If she struck now, she’d lose the element of surprise and she would need that to defeat her abb.
“You see my bent; I won’t allow anything or anyone to come in the way of me regaining my throne. If that means you not having your boyfriend then so be it. You would be wise to remember who you work for.”
She looked at her abb, she knew the kind of man he was, but she never experienced his anger. “I never doubt that abb. I know this is your most treasured task. I won’t let you down.”
“You better not. Because I don’t need an heir to rule, you would be wise to remember how expendable you can be.” He waved his hand in a dismissive nature and signaled her to leave his sight.
Leigh was torn between killing him now or waiting until the throne was within grasp and taking it from him. She walked down the chamber halls until she found her office. Her mind was running different solutions through itself on how to eliminate her abb when she opened the door to see Jonothon sitting at her desk.
